Photoshop Troubleshooting Guide

1. General Photoshop Troubleshooting Checklist

Check System Requirements: Ensure your computer meets the minimum requirements for the version of Photoshop you're running.
Update Photoshop: Go to Help > Updates to ensure you’re using the latest version.
Check Plugins and Extensions: Disable outdated plugins that might conflict with Photoshop.
Restart Photoshop: Restart the application to clear temporary glitches.
Reset Preferences: If issues persist, reset Photoshop preferences to default settings by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Cmd+Option+Shift) while starting Photoshop.

2. Common Photoshop Issues and Solutions

A. Photoshop is Lagging or Freezing

Cause: Large file sizes, outdated hardware, or insufficient system resources.
Solutions:
1. Reduce File Size:
- Flatten layers: Right-click on layers > Flatten Image.
- Delete unused layers or hidden elements.
2. Allocate More RAM:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and increase RAM usage (e.g., set to 70%).
3. Adjust Cache Levels:
- Set cache levels to 4 for a balance between speed and image detail.
4. Disable GPU Acceleration (if GPU is outdated):
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and uncheck "Use Graphics Processor."

B. Tools Not Working Correctly

Cause: Tool settings or mode changes.
Solutions:
1. Reset Tool Options:
- Right-click on the Tool icon in the top-left corner and select Reset Tool or Reset All Tools.
2. Check Mode Settings:
- Ensure the layer blend mode is set to Normal and opacity is 100%.
3. Confirm Layer Selection:
- Ensure you're working on the correct layer in the Layers Panel.

C. Text Looks Blurry or Pixelated

Cause: Incorrect resolution or anti-aliasing settings.
Solutions:
1. Check Document Resolution:
- Go to Image > Image Size and ensure the resolution is at least 300 DPI for print or 72 DPI for web.
2. Enable Anti-Aliasing:
- Select the Text Tool and ensure the Anti-aliasing option (Smooth, Crisp, Sharp) is enabled in the top toolbar.

D. Photoshop Won’t Open or Crashes

Cause: Corrupted preferences, incompatible hardware, or software bugs.
Solutions:
1. Reset Preferences:
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Cmd+Option+Shift) while opening Photoshop. Confirm to reset.
2. Disable Plugins:
- Hold Shift while launching Photoshop to load without plugins.
3. Check GPU Drivers:
- Update your graphics card drivers from the manufacturer’s website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel).
4. Clear Photoshop’s Temp Files:
- On Windows: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Temp.
- On macOS: Use Finder to navigate to ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Photoshop.

E. Can’t Save Files

Cause: Incorrect file format, insufficient storage, or document settings.
Solutions:
1. Check File Format:
- Go to File > Save As and choose the appropriate format (e.g., PSD, PNG, JPG).
- If using a non-supported format, flatten layers first.
2. Free Up Storage:
- Ensure enough space is available on your scratch disk (the drive used for temporary storage).
3. Change Scratch Disk:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks and select a disk with ample space.

F. Brushes Are Not Working or Displaying

Cause: Incorrect settings or corrupted brush files.
Solutions:
1. Check Brush Size and Hardness:
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Right Click (Cmd+Option+Right Click) and drag left/right for size, up/down for hardness.
2. Reset Brushes:
- Go to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager > Brushes and reset to default.
3. Reinstall Brushes:
- Delete and reinstall third-party brushes if corrupted.

G. Color Issues (Wrong Colors or Desaturated)

Cause: Incorrect color settings or monitor calibration.
Solutions:
1. Check Color Mode:
- Go to Image > Mode and ensure it’s set to RGB (for web) or CMYK (for print).
2. Disable Proof Colors:
- Go to View > Proof Colors and uncheck it.
3. Calibrate Monitor:
- Use your operating system’s color calibration tool or a hardware calibrator.

H. Error: “Scratch Disks Are Full”

Cause: Insufficient disk space for Photoshop’s temporary files.
Solutions:
1. Free Up Disk Space:
- Delete large or unnecessary files on the scratch disk.
2. Change Scratch Disk Location:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks and select a drive with more space.
3. Clear Photoshop Cache:
- Go to Edit > Purge > All (note: this clears undo history and clipboard).

3. Specific Troubleshooting Situations

Scenario 1: Removing Background Won’t Work Properly

Problem: Background remains jagged or selection is inaccurate.
Solution:
1. Use Select Subject:
- Go to Select > Subject for automated subject detection.
2. Refine Selection:
- Use Select and Mask to smooth edges and adjust the feather.
3. Adjust Output:
- Export as a PNG with transparency.

Scenario 2: Smart Object Won’t Edit

Problem: You can’t directly edit the Smart Object layer.
Solution:
1. Open the Smart Object:
- Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail in the Layers Panel to open it in a new tab.
2. Make Changes:
- Edit the contents in the new tab. Save and close to update the main file.

Scenario 3: Can’t Apply Filters

Problem: Filters are greyed out.
Solution:
1. Check Layer Type:
- Convert the layer to a rasterized image: Right-click > Rasterize Layer.
2. Verify Color Mode:
- Some filters only work in RGB Mode: Go to Image > Mode > RGB Color.

4. Tips for Preventing Issues

  • Save Frequently: Use Ctrl+S (Cmd+S) to save progress often.
  • Backup Files: Save multiple versions of your project (e.g., ProjectName_v1.psd).
  • Optimize Performance: Limit history states, reduce the resolution of large files, and close unused documents.
  • Learn Shortcuts: Keyboard shortcuts speed up repetitive tasks and reduce tool errors.
