Area, Surface Area, and Volume Reference Sheet

Key Definitions

  1. Apothem:
  2. A line from the center of a regular polygon to the midpoint of one of its sides, forming a right angle with the side.

  3. Axis:

  4. A reference line for measurement or symmetry about which an object can be rotated or divided.

  5. Radius:

  6. The distance from the center of a circle or sphere to its edge (circumference for a circle, surface for a sphere).

Quick Reference for Formulas

2D Shapes (Area)

  1. Square:
  2. ( A = {side}^2 )

  3. Rectangle:

  4. ( A = {length} * {width} )

  5. Triangle:

  6. ( A = \frac{{base} * {height}}{2} )

  7. Circle:

  8. ( A = \pi r^2 )

  9. Parallelogram:

  10. ( A = {base} * {height} )

  11. Trapezium (Trapezoid):

  12. ( A = \frac{1}{2} ({base}_1 + {base}_2) * {height} )

3D Shapes (Surface Area and Volume)

  1. Cube:
  2. Surface Area: ( 6 * {side}^2 )
  3. Volume: ( {side}^3 )

  4. Rectangular Prism (Cuboid):

  5. Surface Area: ( 2(lw + lh + wh) )
  6. Volume: ( l * w * h )

  7. Sphere:

  8. Surface Area: ( 4\pi r^2 )
  9. Volume: ( \frac{4}{3} \pi r^3 )

  10. Cylinder:

  11. Surface Area: ( 2\pi r(h + r) )
  12. Volume: ( \pi r^2 h )

  13. Cone:

  14. Surface Area: ( \pi r(r + l) ) (where ( l ) is the slant height)
  15. Volume: ( \frac{1}{3} \pi r^2 h )

  16. Pyramid:

  17. Surface Area: Base Area + ( \frac{1}{2} * {Perimeter} * {Slant Height} )
  18. Volume: ( \frac{1}{3} * {Base Area} * {Height} )

Tips for Applying These Formulas

  1. Ensure measurements are in the same units before calculating.
  2. For composite shapes, break them into smaller, manageable parts (e.g., rectangles, triangles).
  3. Use ( \pi = 3.142 ) or the exact value on your calculator for better precision in circle and sphere calculations.
  4. Double-check calculations for complex shapes, especially those involving multiple dimensions or components (e.g., pyramids, cones).
